Hay Fever Injection

Severe hay fever symptoms can ruin your summer and have a detrimental effect on quality of life and ability to work optimally. If you have severe symptoms that fail to respond to other treatments, such as oral antihistamine medications or topical eye drops it is possible to request an appointment to discuss a hay fever injection.

Our hay fever injection is a corticosteroid injection given into the buttock. The medication has anti-inflammatory properties which slightly suppress the immune system and stop the body’s natural pollen response from creating unpleasant ‘cold like’ symptoms. The treatment starts to work approximately 2 days after treatment and results last up to 3 months.

All injections are given by a fully qualified medical practitioner. We will undertake a careful risk assessment during your consultation to make sure that you are a good candidate for treatment, and will explain the potential side effects and likely benefits in detail.

The dose required to control severe symptoms is partly related to body weight. If you are over 80kg you will require a larger dose to ease your symptoms.

The full range of treatment options available for hay fever will be discussed in your consultation and they will advise whether the potential benefits of the treatment for severe hay fever outweigh any risks.
